A dedicated dehumidifier controls moisture independently of temperature, which matters in spring and fall when the air is damp but not hot enough for the air conditioner to run much.

It is the right tool when the cooling system is correctly sized and the envelope has already been addressed, but humidity still sits high. It is the wrong tool when the real problem is a return duct pulling humid crawl space air into the system.
