Heat Pump Maintenance
A heat pump runs in both seasons, so it logs roughly twice the operating hours of a cooling only system and needs service twice a year. The visits should test heating mode, cooling mode, the defrost cycle, and the backup heat staging.
Backup heat gets ignored because it is invisible until the power bill arrives. Elements can fail, sequencers can stick closed, and contactors can weld, and a stuck backup heat stage can quietly run alongside the heat pump for weeks.
Measuring amp draw on each stage takes a few minutes and catches a problem that no thermostat will report.

You can keep grass, leaves, and debris away from the cabinet and keep about two feet of clearance around it. Coil cleaning, electrical testing, and refrigerant work should be left to a technician.
